At Sonaspection, we’re passionate about developing future talent and supporting people who share our commitment to precision, quality, and growth. This month, we’re introducing Julia Kubanek, Welding Apprentice at Sonaspection UK.
From psychology to welding
After being accepted to study psychology at university, Julia realised she wanted to pursue something more hands-on and practical. She enrolled at Morecambe College, where she completed her Level 1 Welding course – experimenting with MIG, TIG, and stick welding in different positions, from overhead to vertical.
That initial experience sparked a new passion, and Julia soon joined Sonaspection to continue her training.
Learning on the job
Julia is currently completing her Level 2 Welding Apprenticeship, spending four days a week at Sonaspection and one day at college. This balance allows her to gain invaluable workplace experience while continuing her formal training.
Her skills have already impressed the team – particularly her stick welding – and she’s building confidence with each project.
“At Sonaspection, we’re committed to nurturing the next generation of welding and NDT professionals. Apprentices like Julia bring fresh energy and a real passion for learning, which is vital to the future of our industry. It’s inspiring to see her progress so quickly and embrace the high standards we pride ourselves on.”
Neil Kelly, Chief Executive Officer at Sonaspection

Taking pride in precision
For Julia, welding has been a completely new challenge after years of academic study. She’s embraced the responsibility of producing work to the highest standards, and preparation has become a key focus.
“What I’ve learned most so far is the importance of doing things properly – taking the time to check the setup, measure everything out, and get it right before starting. At Sonaspection, the standards are so high, and it motivates me to always aim for that level of accuracy.”

Future Goals
With welding already in her family – her dad was also a welder – Julia is proud to be continuing the tradition while building her own career. She’s aiming to progress to Level 3 and is motivated by the chance to keep developing her skills, take on new challenges, and grow within the industry.
We’re excited to see Julia’s journey unfold and to support her every step of the way as she works towards becoming a highly skilled welder.
